I am sure each one of us has at sometime or the other felt upset about something.  How are we at such times? Do we feel very focused or motivated in our work?Are we at our best in our relationships? Of course not! At such times we often find ourselves fatigued and lacking in enthusiasm.

Looking after our mental state needs to be prioritized and valued to help us lead a fulfilling life. Mental health is an important part of our life at each stage. It comprises of our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

Importance of Mental Health

There are innumerable benefits of good mental health.  It helps us cope with various stressors in our life in a healthy manner. Stress can adversely affect our health. It can lead to symptoms like headache, sleep disturbance, muscle tension, fatigue, upset stomach and lowered immunity.  By taking care of our psychological well-being, we can protect ourselves from the harmful effects of stress.

A positive mental state aids in better social adjustment.Working on our mental health can also help us contribute positively to interpersonal relationships. Forming and maintaining healthy relationships comes more naturally as it becomes easier to spend quality time with our loved ones and support them in times of distress.

Sense of well-being and positive self-image. A person can often find success and fulfilment in their lives when they are in a state of good mental health. It could lead to a more upbeat outlook and attitude, and a greater sense of self-assurance.

Increases Motivation. Everyday routines and responsibilities may seem monotonous and taxing when we are in a bad headspace. Taking care of our mental health enables us to have a sense of stability and motivates us to work towards our goals.

Ways To Take Care Of Your Mental Well-being

Our mental health affects each aspect of our life. Hence, it’s critical to protect and enhance psychological wellness with effective interventions. Here are some ways to take care of our well-being.

Follow a healthy lifestyle. Include regular exercise in your routine. It boosts your happy hormones like endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. A healthy diet and adequate sleep go a long way in maintaining physical and mental well-being.

Be aware of your emotions and acknowledge feelings. It helps to cope with different situations and to manage difficult feelings.

Checking in with yourself is a helpful practice. It’s easy to get caught up in the daily hustle and bustle of life and lose track of our needs and what is important to us. Take out the time to reflect on your day and get in touch with your feelings and needs. Ensure that you are taking care of your physical and emotional needs.

Build a Social Support System. Keeping in touch with your loved ones can be a great source of comfort and joy. Conflicts can be resolved with effective communication and mutual respect. Healthy relationships bring positivity to one’s life and enrich it by providing care and support.

Regular breaks are a great way to rejuvenate. Inculcating time for your hobbies into your daily schedule can be a creative way to engage with your inner child. Making gadget free zones in your house can also be a good means to stay in the moment and relax.

Seek help if needed. Problems with our physical health lead us to consult doctors. In the same manner, we can consult mental health professionals in case of issues with our psychological and emotional well-being.
